FATHER OF FOUR DIES IN HEAD-ON COLLISION OF CARS
R.E. Buchanan, 34, Victim in Accident Near West Middleseex
Mercer County's third traffic fatality of the year resulted Saturday night with the death of a former Shenango Valley man in an auto collision on Route 18, four miles south of West Middlesex.
Robert E. Buchanan, 34, of 145 Market St., New Wilmington, a native of Sharpsville, was dead on arrival at Jameson Memorial Hospital, New Castle, at 9:33 pm. Two youthful sailors were injured in the two-car collision, one of them critically.
Buchanan, was an employee of the Sharon Westinghouse plant and father of four children, died almost instantly of a skull fracture.
The injured were Jack L. Clements, 19, Owensboro, Ky, and Edward Ryan, 20, of 330 Neshannock Ave., New Castle, both U.S. Navy seamen.
Buchanan was born at Sharpsville on Jan 20 1921, a son of Robert and Edna Davis Buchanan. He had lived in the Valley most of his life, moving to the New Wilmington community several years ago.
At the Westinghouse, he was employed as a fitter in H-30. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the Moose Lodge at New Castle.
On March 19, 1941, he married Evelyn M. Noah. She survives with fou rchildren, Patricia Ann 12, Robert Edward 11, Gail Eileen 8, and Denise Joy, two months. All are at home.
Also surviving are his parents of Farrell; five sisters, Evelyn E., wifeof Walter Gelesky, RD 1 West Middlesex; Vivian L., wife of William Pearce, Berwyn, Ill; Edna E, wife of John Rakoci, West Middlesex; Audrey J., wife of Wray Sovine, Las Vages, Nev., and Norma J, wife of Andrew Bandzak, Farrell; and four brothers, Stanley G., RD 2, Sharon; Donald W., with the US Army in Germany; Russell E., Sharon, and James E., Farrell.
