She was born Catharine Homes, but her name eventually changed to Catherine, since people kept spelling it wrong. She was raised in Gratiot County. In her Bible (which I have) she kept a newspaper clipping that noted Saint Louis (her birthplace) as the geographic center of Michigan.
She married Ernie Perry Gilmore on 20 Jun 1917, which she noted in her Bible. They had four children: Edna Grace, Doris Marie (my grandmother), Arthur J, and an infant son, who was born premature and died.
She married second, Deo Laverne Green (who also is noted as Vern Deo) on 6 Oct 1929. This marriage is not noted in her Bible or family records anywhere and her children (including my grandmother) did not speak of Deo as a husband. Court records show Deo filed for divorce 28 Feb 1930. No final divorce decree date is shown.
Catharine married Deo's brother, Naaman D'Eston Green, on 6 Jun 1943 in Ingham County. Catharine notes this marriage in her Bible and on the entry for his death, she wrote, "Beloved husband." After his death, she did not remarry. As she grew older and became ill, her bachelor son, Arthur, cared for her until the day she died. She is buried next to Naaman.
Grandma Green was a religious woman and her most important and prized possession was her Bible.
