George W. Roe (1921 - 2011)

George Washington Roe, affectionately known by many as "Dee," passed away peacefully at his home Sunday, July 17, 2011, in the company of his family. Funeral: 11:30 a.m. Friday in Mount Olivet Chapel. Interment: Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Mount Olivet Funeral Home.

George was born Jan. 15, 1921, in Decatur, the seventh of nine children born to B.F. and Eva Roe. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1938 to 1958, and was a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor as a shipmember on the USS Antares. He traveled the world in defense of our nation, and received numerous commendations for his brave and loyal service. Upon his retirement from the Navy, George began his career with the U.S. Postal Service, where he worked tirelessly and made countless friends until his second retirement, this time in 1982. Retirement never suited George though, and he soon went back to work at Millers Insurance Group in downtown Fort Worth. He spent more than 10 years there before retiring for the final time in 1997, at the age of 76. When he wasn't working, George loved golfing, building furniture, fixing things around the house and spending quality time with his family. He was loved and respected by many, and will always be missed and remembered. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Christi Hays for her loving care.

Survivors: His wife of 67 years, Ethel Roe; daughter, Georgia Rayes Smith; grandsons, Daniel Rayes and Chris Smith; great-granddaughter, Danille Rayes; and great-great-grandchildren, Anna Michelle Speers and Michael Joseph Speers.
