Sarah was the second of five known children born to John Cheney and his first wife, Elizabeth Seager, of Newton, Massachusetts. Sarah was married in Newton on 3 September 1729 to Isaac Shepard, Jr., the son of Isaac Shepard and Elizabeth Fuller of Watertown, Mass. Sarah and Isaac Shepard, jr. had ten known children together.
