Services for Mrs John A Brown, 84, long time operator of the John A Brown Co department stores in Oklahoma City and Norman will be at 4 pm Wednesday at Crown Heights Methodist Church. She died Monday at St Anthony Hospital. Burial will be at Fairlawn Mausoleum by Hahn-Cook Street & Draper Funeral Home.

Widow of John Albert Brown who died in 1940, Mrs Brown was born in Las Vegas NM, the daughter of John McFarlin and Ida A Dunkin.

Mrs Brown figured prominently in the business life of Oklahoma City for more than 50 years. She left a legacy of business contributions to the area and a string of department stores, a kind of merchantile empire established carefully through those 50 years.

Until 1960 Mrs Brown was connected with the Brown-Dunkin department store in Tulsa. With the sale of that store, Mrs Brown's businesses included the Oklahoma City store, one in Norman, a Capitol Hill store and one in Penn Square.

With 1,300 employees, the company ranked as the 8th largest employer in Oklahoma City in a January survey. The building of the Brown merchantile chain began soon after Brown bought out his cousin-partner, A O Rorabaugh, in 1932. Mrs Brown took over the operation of the company after her husband's death.

Mrs Brown was a versatile musician at one time. She studied at the Busch Conservatory of Music in Kansas City and later at the Conservatory of Music in Chicago. She also did some advanced study in Italy and was accomplished on the piano, organ and as a singer.

In 1952, Mrs Brown was elected to the board of directors of the merchandising division of the National Retail Dry Goods Association. She was only the third woman to serve in that capacity.

She was a member of the Oklahoma State Chamber of Commerce, the Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce, and a long list of other civic and social organizations. She was elected to the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 1959 and was named as special honoree in the "Salute to Women Who Work" in 1960.

Survivors include her brother, F W Duncan (Dunkin) of Woodland Hills CA; 4 nieces, Ida Kathryn Cooke and Della Mae Dortch of Batesville AR, Della Jane Buford of Tulsa, and Martha Kate Hickox of Woodland Hills CA; one nephew, John Randolph Duncan (Dunkin), Oklahoma City.

The family requests that memorials be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation.
