U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the University of Alabama, in 1857, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1859 and commenced to practice law in Montevallo, Alabama. During Civil War, he served as a Captain in the 2nd Alabama Cavalry, Confederate Army. After war, he served as a member of the Alabama State House of Representatives, (1870-72). In 1875, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fourth Congress, serving until 1877. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was again elected to the Forty-sixth Congress, serving (1879-80) when he resigned. After leaving Congress, he served as president of the University of Alabama and engaged in the iron business until his death.
