Enlisted as a Sergeant into Company A of the 2nd Wisconsin Infantry which became part of the famous "Iron Brigade" that fought during the Civil War and eventually earned the rank of 1st Sergeant. He was wounded at 2nd Bull Run, Gettysburg, and again at the Wilderness where he was captured.
