John Hughes Sr was a fairly wealthy landowner in what was known as Retro (later Bakewell). Tenn. He had originally migrated from Greene Co. Tenn to Bledsoe County then to Hamilton Co. Tenn. After his death,(1870's) his children and their spouses sued each other over his property (there was no will).
From records of family historian David Gray, now deceased:
John Hughes appears on Hamilton Co. Tenn Census records from 1830 - 1870. From 1850 on he is listed with wife Jane. His birth is calculated at 1779 and hers at 1780. From depositions of their children, in Chancery Case #786, John & Jane married in Middle Tennessee at the Falls on the Cumberland in the home of a Mr. Whovers. A former household slave, Anny Hughes also testified. Deposition of Henry Skiles, age 72
