Henry County Man Is Badley Injured

Prominent Farmer Paralyzed as Result of Auto Turning Turle

Mount Pleasant, la . Oct. 20. - (Special.) - Mr. L. M. Hartley, age 65, a member of the Board of Directors of the Henry County Agricultural association and one of tne most prominent farmers and stockmen in this county, operating a farm of some 1,500 acres near Salem, is lying at his home at the point of death as the result of an automobile accident. On Monday evening G. W. Nickolaus and Arlo Carnahan of this city were returning from Keosauqua in Mr. Nickolaus car. They had reached a point in the road three and a half miles west of Hillshoro when they found Mr. Hartley lying in the middle of the road in a helpless condition while his car was lying on its side. Two passersby had gotten the cushions from the car and placed the injured man on them. He was conscious but completely paralyzed in his lower limbs and had a severe cut on his ear. The men lifted his carefully into Mr Nickolaus' car and he was taken to his home where medical aid was at once summoned. The physicians gave very little hope of his recovery as they thought his back was broken. Mr. Hartley was unable to say how the accident happened hut as there were two distinct tracks in thethe centre it is presumed that the car road at this point and a high ridge in must have struck the ridge and turned over throwing Mr. Hartley out. Should the injuries not prove fatal now he will be an invalid for the rest of his life.
