In Memoriam
Died - At her home in Big Timber at 9:15 on Monday morning, April 17, 1893. Ellen DeWitt Hatch widow of the late Col. R. B. Hatch, aged 69 years, 1 month and 10 days. The cause of death being la grippe, superseded by acute bronchitis. Her death was a singularly peaceful one, but came as a terrible shock to her children and to her many friends. On Tuesday the 11th, she was taken with la grippe but recovered sufficiently to be up on Wednesday and Thursday. Friday she was confined to her bed but read her letters and papers and seemed as bright as usual, that night she was quite restless and coughed a great deal but on Saturday morning seemed better until about noon, when a turn was taken for the worse, and she commenced steadily sinking and, although given every care that loving hands could bestow and medical science suggest, she never rallied, but on Monday morning surrounded by her four sons living here passed "to the bourne from which no traveller returns." She suffered no pain and though at times sleeping never until near the end, wholly lost consciousness.
The funeral took place yesterday from the Congregational church and was attended by a large number of friends and relatives, the services being conducted by Rev. F. B. Lewis, of the Bozeman Episcopal church. The burial took place at the cemetery where the body will rest until removed to its last resting place at Griggsville, Illinois, where lie the remains of her husband and three children.
Ellen DeWitt Bush was born at Pittsfield, Massachusetts on February 27, 1824. In 1836 (8?) her father removed to what is now known as Pittsfield, Illinois where her early womanhood was spent and where in 1846 she was married to Reuben B. Hatch, whose death on July 28, 1871, from the hardships and severe service during the war, left a wound from which she never fully recovered. Of the union thus formed there were born nine children. Of the six surviving there are; State Senator George M. Hatch, Ozias M. Hatch, Arthur G. Hatch, and Morton W. Hatch, editor of this paper all residents of Big Timber, Mrs. Lucy A. Mirrielees, who has for the past two years been residing at St. Thomas, Ontario, and Benton Hatch, of Jamestown North Dakota. As in her earlier years so too in her last, much time was devoted to literary pursuits her life indeed was a very busy one and being a woman of rare endowments, her articles found ready place in standard periodicals. Her last work was upon three books, one of Western Scenes (now in the hands of the publisher) one of poems and another of western life, all of which save a portion of the last, were completed. In 1889, in recognition of her attainments, she was elected an honorary member of the Montana Press Association and in September 1891 enjoyed the memorable excursion made to the great Salt Lake, in Utah
Of her life and of her deed it is hardly within our province to speak that office belonging more properly to others. Honest and just in her convictions; a thoroughly Christian woman; a devoted and loving wife and mother surely the world is better for her having lived.
