J. M. HILL'S DEATH DUE TO ACCIDENT
Coroner Investigates Drowning of Contractor - Body Found in Canal.

DISAPPEARED THURSDAY

Left Work in Morning and Nothing Was Seen of Him After That - Boatman Discovers Body in Canal Near Grape Street - Had Been Ill a Week - Son Was Drowned Thirteen Years Ago.

That the drowning of Joseph M. Hill, the well known contractor and director of the Mystique Krewe, was accidental is the belief of Coroner George R. Kinne, who spent the morning investigating the death.
Mr. Hill's body was found in the Erie canal near the Grape street bridge at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon by a passing boatman. He reported the discovery to those on shore near the spot and boys dived for the body and carried it ashore. Mr. Hill had been missing since Thursday morning, and since Saturday the police had been looking for him.
Mrs. Hill and her son, John, aged 15, were in Yonkers until word was sent them Saturday that Mr. Hill was missing. They hurried to this city and were at home yesterday when informed of the discovery of the body in the canal. Mrs. Hill is prostrated with grief.
The possibility that Mr. Hill's death might have been other than accidental caused Coroner Kinne to make a thorough investigation this morning. He learned facts, he said at noon to-day, that led him to believe that the drowning was an accident. Mr. Hill had been ill a week, being in bed for two days early last week. At his office in the Kirk building it was stated this morning that when he returned to the office Thursday morning his face was flushed and he appeared to be very dizzy. He complained of not feeling well, but started out of the office to go with his foreman, Harvey M. De Line of No. 313 Kellogg street, to Euclid avenue, where a sidewalk was being laid under Mr. Hill's supervision.
After looking over the work a few minutes, Mr. Hill told De Line that he did not feel able to stay on the job and was going home and go to bed. This was at 10:30 o'clock. Mr. Hill was not seen alive after that. Coroner Kinne believes that after leaving De Line he thought of something downtown that he wanted and that in crossing one of the downtown bridges or wandering along the towpath inspecting some work he became dizzy, fell in the water and was too weak to save himself.
The identification of the body taken out of the canal at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon was made by a number of members of Syracuse lodge, No. 31, B.P.O.E., Secretary William Ferguson among them. A card bearing the name of Joseph M.Hill was found in the man's pockets and the Elks notified. Identification was made positive by Henry P. Warner of No. 174 Holland street, a brother-in-law of the deceased.
Thirteen years ago, Joseph M. Hill jr., Mr. Hill's son, was drowned in Onondaga creek. He was 6 years old.
Mr. Hill is survived by his widow, Mrs. Fanny Childs Hill; by one son, John; two sisters, Mrs. John B. Copcutt of Yonkers and Mrs. Howard Henry of Des Moines, Iowa, and an aunt, Mr. J. W. Yale. Funeral services will be held at 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at his late home, with burial at Oakwood.
