Born in Lincoln County, he was a warehouse manager for FCX.
Survivors include one son, Jim Abernethy of Lincolnton; two daughters, Ann Jenkins of Lincolnton, and Kay Houser of Vale; two brothers, Joe Abernethy of Lincolnton, and Robert Abernethy of Vale; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
