Edith Abernethy Craig, age 90, of Taylorsville died Saturday, August 14, 1999, at Britthaven Nursing Center in Wilkesboro following six months of declining health.

She was born in Lincoln County September 24, 1908, the daughter of the late Robert Earl (Doc) Abernethy, Sr., and Hattie Pearl Rhyne Abernethy. She was a graduate of Union High School in Lincoln County and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of North Wilkesboro, where whe was a member of the Ruby Johnson Sunday School Class. She worked for over thirty-eight years in retail clothing stores in North Wilkesboro, Including Jean's, Ruby's and Carol Kaye until her retirement at age 75. She was an active participant at the Alexander County Senior Center during her retirement.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Russell R. Craig, in 1985; one brother, John Abernethy; two sisters, Georgia Wilson and Irene Flowers; and two granddaughters in 1992, Claudia Davis and Patricia Aldridge.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Ruth C. and Everette Davis of Taylorsville; one son and daughter-in-law, William R. and Janie Craig of Richmond, Va., three brothers, Joe Abernethy of Lincolnton, Robert Abernethy of Vale, and Hugh Abernethy of Maiden; four grandchildren, Tony and Helen Davis and Gary and Debbie Davis, all of Taylorsville, Steve and Ann Craig of Skidmore, Tx., and Jim Craig of Richmond, Va., nine great-grandchildren, Monte and Bridgette Rhyne of Stony Point, Tammy Rhyne of Statesville, April Davis of Hiddenite, and Ben Craig, Kate Craig, Rachel Craig, Paul Craig, James Craig and Daniel Craig, all of Skidmore, Tx., two great-great-grandchildren, Alex and Felicia Rhyne of Stony Point; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday morning, August 18, 1999 at the First United Methodist Church of North Wilkesboro with Rev. Sydnor Thompson and Rev. Don Wales officiating. Burial followed in Scenic Memorial Gardens in Wilkesboro.

Pallbearers included Steve Craig, Jim Craig, Monte Rhyne, Chad Watts, Dale Johnson, and Blake Daniels. Honorary pallbearers included Carroll Aldridge, Virgil Anthony, and Bobby Anthony.
