Mitchell was the oldest of seven children born to David Anderson and Fannie L. (Kivett) Burgess. He married Lessie Stout in 1916 and they were the parents of seven children: Paul, Noyd Anderson, Maxine Ellen, Geraldine, Doris, Earl and Normalee.
