Born in Albemarle County, Virginia in 1833, moved with his family to northeastern Missouri in the 1830's where they settled near Prairieville in Pike County. Bankhead and his brother-in-law, Edward B. Hill formed companies in the Louisville area of Pikes County. His family lost most of their holdings during the civil war due to federal confiscation. His brother, Thomas Randolph Bankhead died in a federal prison camp. He returnd to Pike County after the war and died in 1911.
