Matilda was probably born in Ogle County, IL (NW of Chicago, close to WI border). Matilda was the last child of Larkin and Rosanna Baker born 21 years after the 1st. She would have known but not remembered her Great Grand Baxter; she moved to Missouri as a baby to Peters Colony Texas. The first day of April 1844, Hall Medlin and his family, his mother Rachel Medlin, brother Owen Medlin, three of his sisters and their husbands, James Gibson, James P. and John Halford, his wife's father Larkin Baker and his sons with about ten other families made the dangerous trip into Texas. They arrived at White Rock and Peter's Colony in June 1844.

Matilda J Baker, married first John C Rich, 1854 in Hill County, Texas, they had two children Mary and William Rich. Matilda second husband was John Henry McNear they were married in 1864, in Hill County, Texas. They were married 36 years, Matilda said she had 9 children with 7 living.
