Adelia was almost 5 when she died. She was frail from birth, with a weak heart. Her father took her to Main Street to watch the Barnum and Bailey circus parade. The circus, whose summer quarters was in Baraboo, was giving a preview to the townsfolk, as they would be putting on a performance in town. As the parade of clowns, wagons, and animals passed by, a tall giraffe, who was being led by a rope around his neck, swung his long neck down to the edge of the street; his big head came so close to little Dala that she was badly frightened and collapsed. Dala died soon after. Her mother kept Dala's and sister Anna's baby photos on the mantle in her little living room for the rest of her life. Their yet unborn sister Emma put fresh flowers on her siblings' graves for the rest of hers…..
