Ernstine was probably born in Tornow, Saatzig, Pommern (Pomerania), her mother's home village. Pommern, a Germanic duchy, was given to Poland after WWII, and the Tornow church records were lost . Ernstine was the eldest of 7 children of Daniel and Friedricke (Köhn) Schulz. Ernstine and Wilhelm were the first family members to emigrate, traveling from Bremen on the SS America and arriving in NY on 19 December. She was a devoted wife and mother and a deeply involved member of the German Methodist Church in Watertown.
