John Columbus Pickett was born on the Pickett Farm in Town Creek, GA, on December 14, 1848 to Joseph and Caroline Amanda Pickett.

He was appointed the postmaster of the now-defunct Town Creek post office on January 2, 1872. He married Margaret Holt on July 14, 1872. His first child, John Lester, was born in Gilmer County in 1874. His second child, Martha Flora, was born in 1877 in either Gilmer or Pickens County.

He did not stay in Town Creek very long and moved to Jasper in Pickens County. He ran for the Georgia Senatorial Race in 1886 for the 41st district. (Not today's 41st district, which is located in Stone Mountain.)

He got his doctorate in 1880 from the Georgia Eclectic Medical School and practiced general medicine and surgery until his untimely sudden death at age 49.

John died in a buggy accident with his wife (she survived) on Univeter Road in Canton. The family legend states he was in a race but he was more likely either on a house call or visiting someone. It is said his funeral was rather large and the church could not fit everyone who wanted to attend. Rev. A. B. Vaughn and Rev. J. N. Snow conducted the service.
