Reverend Captain William Ulm left Ohio, at the age of 6 years, with his father's family to what is now Wabash County, Illinois. There he married his first wife, Hester M. Campbell, daughter of Neil and Hester Campbell, 29 Dec 1836. She died in 1844.

His second marriage was to Elizabeth Payne (1826-1854).

His third marriage was to Sarah Campbell, daughter of James Pritchard Campbell and Mary Glenn, 27 July 1954. Sarah was born 11 Oct 1837 in Wilson County, Tennessee. She died 23 Sep 1910 and is buried in Chapman Cemetery.

William Ulm was an ardent Methodist, and when about 35 years of age felt the call to preach the Gospel. In 1860 he was ordained to the Methodist ministry by Bishop Matthew Simpson at Bunker Hill, Illinois. He gave several years of his life to the active ministry, but his pastoral labors were interrupted by the Civil War. He enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company "I" 32nd Regiment. He resigned his commission on 3 Sep 1862. In one battle he was badly wounded and barely escaped death. After the war he was commissioned as a Captain of the Home Guards by Governor Yates.

Hester M. Campbell's birth day cannot be correct. Records show she was born around 1815.
