At age 18, Elisabeth married Tony Jansen in 1890. “Her presence was as sunshine in her home and she imparted happiness wherever she went. She had taken much pleasure in contemplating the beautiful new home which her husband had provided, but was permitted to enjoy its comforts but one year.” Elisabeth and Tony had three children. Son Joseph was 10, son Ben was 7 and daughter Katharine, 4, when Elisabeth died from consumption.
In addition to her three children, she had helped to raise Elizabeth Schmidt, her niece by marriage who came to live with the Jansen family when her mother died.
(Quotation from “Illinois Historical, Effingham County Biographical” [1910]; other resources, “St. Mary Help of Christians Church, 1860-1985”; June 18, 1903, obituary, Teutopolis Press.)
