Ernestine Anderson was born in 1902 in the community of Red Moon, Oklahoma Territory near the present-day town Cheyenne, Oklahoma. Her parents, Eva and Arch Anderson, were homesteading there after the Cheyenne-Arapaho landrun of 1892.

Ernestine's father died when she was just one year old and while her mother was pregnant with her sister, Archie Alberta Anderson. Her mother raised the two girls as a single mother and stressed the importance of education to them.

After graduating from Cheyenne High School in 1920, Ernestine served as the teacher of the Grimes one-room schoolhouse in Roger Mills County. She went on to college eventually earning a doctorate in English Literature, a master's degree and seven bachelor's degrees with 14 minors. She taught English, Spanish, Math and even Aviation at colleges including Oklahoma A&M (OSU), Oklahoma Baptist University and Jarvis University in Tyler, TX.

Ernestine bore three live children, Betty Kathryne, Mary Louise and James Archie "Bill" Leverett as well as having one stillborn child. Her husband abandoned the family during the Great Depression and she raised the children as a single mother with the help of her mother, Eva Anderson.

Ernestine was an avid traveler and visited every continent except Antartica and Australia. She was also an active volunteer using her love of literature to read books on tape for the Library for the Blind and serving as a Pink Lady at Baptist Hospital in Oklahoma City. She was a member of the Disciples of Christ church and attended various congregations over the years.
