Nelson's death date is taken from his probate record.

Nelson's parents' names are unknown. The first record of him is in 1836 when he was working for Rev. James Selkrigg, per "History of Berrien County, MI". In 1843 he is found on land warrant records in Kalamazoo, MI. He married Pleaides Woodruff on 23 Nov 1845, at which time he stated he was 30 years old. This would put his birth date about 1815, not 1822. We're not sure where the date on the headstone came from.

Nelson and Pleaides were married at the house of Henry White, by Milton Bradley, Minister of the Gospel Church. Witnesses were Ira Hoyt, Henry Woodruff, and William Woodruff. In the 1850 census, he was living in Wayland, MI, next door to James Selkrigg and his family. At this time, Nelson and Pleaides had two children, Charles and Mary. They eventually had two more children, James and John. Both Nelson and Pleaides died very young, of unknown causes.
