Gustaf's mother was 25 at the time of Gustaf's birth, putting her birth year at about 1798. Witnesses/sponsors at Gustaf's baptism were Johan Gustafsson, Lena Andesdotter of Thorsjo, and Anna from Nobbeled Prastgard, Sweden.

After his emigration in 1853, Gustaf worked on a farm north of Stillwater, MN, and while there, rowed out to help a sick Swedish immigrant family stranded on an island - and met his future wife, Carolina. They were married in 1856. They began farming in the wilderness of Franconia Township, not too far from Shafer, on Bloom Lake. They had 13 children. Carolina died 1-Mar-1878. Gustaf then married Elin Carlson on 21-Nov-1879 at Center City by Rev. J. J. Frodeen.

Gustaf joined Chisago Lake Lutheran Church 30-Dec-1855 and Carolina on 26-Aug-1855. Elina/Ellen was born 16-Mar-1829 and died 21-Mar-1915. Gust and both wives are buried at the Chisago Lake Lutheran Cemetery in Center City, MN. Elin was the daughter of Carl Magnus Johansson and Kathrina Carlsson.
