8/23/1918 Shawnee Soldier Killed in Action (Friday)
Shawnee, Okla., Aug. 22 – Private James A. Karr of Shawnee was killed in action July 30, according to a telegram from the war department just received by his father, J.C. Karr.
"I am living for my God," Karr wrote his sister, Mrs. Edith Cowan, just before embarking for the war front. "Last night our lieutenant made us a talk and it was just like some talks my dear old mother used to make. I could not sleep last night until I had made peace with God and now I feel that I am read to die – not that I was afraid of getting killed, but it was just that talk that made me think of the talks that my dear old mother had made me before she died."
"I have already been under fire," Karr wrote recently from France, "and did not get excited the least bit; for we know they can't beat the Yanks, for we have Old Glory behind U.S. and the Lord is for us, and the world will be."
