She was a very loving mother and grand mother who loved cooking and baking wonderful meals for her family and taking special care of her children and grandchildren. She was born in Charlton County, Georgia on September 10, 1920 to Matthew and Gussie Victoria Minchew Smith.
She was a member of the Baptist faith and a member of North Jacksonville Baptist Church.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Frank S. Barfield in 1982, sons, John William Barfield, Sr., and Rickie Carswell Barfield, grandsons, John W. Barfield, Jr., and David M. Smiley in 2010; siblings, 3 brothers, Ernest, Wilbur, and R. M. Smith; 3 sisters, Jessie Melzer, Louise Jones, and Hazel Hildebrand.
Survivors include her daughter, M. Elizabeth (Bettye) Blankenship and husband Ray; granddaughters, Tresa Lang, Leasa Barfield, and Michelle Sanders and husband Chuck; great grandchildren, Owen Ward, John Barfield, III, Jade Lang, Jonathan Smiley and Trey Sanders; and many loving nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday July 12, 2011 at 11am in the chapel of Cedar Bay Funeral Home, 405 New Berlin Road Jacksonville, with Rev. Billy T. Turner officiating. Interment will follow in Arlington Memorial Park Cemetery.
