Helen Schott of Cocoa, Fla., a former longtime East Marion resident, died at home Feb. 5, surrounded by her family. She was 85.
Born on Feb. 13, 1923, in Manhattan to Karol and Eva (Galka) Kacedan, she married William P. Schott Sr. on Sept. 6, 1942, in Wilmington, Del. They were married for 65 years and raised a large family.

She was primarily a homemaker, and when the family moved to East Marion in 1966, Helen began working at the Greenport A&P, where she managed the deli. Known to many as "Miss Helen" or simply "the sandwich lady," she handed out samples to kids and adults, always with a smile. She was a caring and loving person who cherished family and friends (and her cat, Beau), she loved to cook and always had a smile to share. Everyone was always welcome in her home. And she will be missed.

Helen was predeceased by her oldest son, William P. Schott Jr. (August 2004), her sister, Pauline Frumenti (June 2006) and her husband, William P. Schott Sr. (September 2007).

She is survived by her children, Henry, of Salt Point, N.Y.; Stephen, of East Marion; John, of Greenport; Maryanne Schott Turner of Manhattan and East Marion; Carl, of Red Hook, N.Y.; and Peter, of Cutchogue.

Her grandchildren are Stephanie Mrzyglod of Hudson, N.Y.; William P, Schott III of Ballston Spa, N.Y.; Christopher Schott of Farmington, Utah; Laura Mullins of Patchogue; Stephen Schott of East Marion; Kevin Schott of Rumford, R.I.; Elissa Schott of Taunton, Mass.; Jamie Schott and John Schott Jr., both of Greenport; Michelle Schott and Andrew Turner, both of Manhattan; and Zachary Schott of Red Hook, N.Y.

Her great-grandchildren are Christian, Jacob and Lila Schott of Greenport; Christian, Alexander and Chloe Schott of Farmington, Utah; Michael Mrzyglod of Hudson, N.Y.; Tina Marie Mullins of Patchogue; and Brady Schott of Rumford, R.I.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Thomas Murray at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, at St. Agnes R.C. Church, Greenport. Interment will follow at St. Agnes cemetery. Arrangements by Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport.

Memorial donations may be sent to Wuesthoff Brevard Hospice, 8060 Spyglass Hill Road, Viera, FL 32940.
