Another Veteran Answers to Call
Another one of the rapidly decreasing number of the old soldiers has received his discharge and passed to the beyond. Mr. Goddard has always been a citizen of Lexington, having been born in Lexington. H had passed his 60th birthday when he died at his home after an illness extending with more or less severity over a period of about 2 years. He was the son of Abbott and Elizabeth Goddard who came to Lexington in the early days. H was a quiet citizen who made many friends and attended strictly to his own business.
He was a clerk of Lexington Township and a member of the G.A.R.
When not yet 17 years of age, he enlisted in the service of his country and was a member of Co. C. 94th Illinois Infantry. He participated in the capture of Fort Morgan, the fight at Pascagoula and the storming of the Spanish Fort which resulted in the surrender of Mobile, Alabama. He was transferred to the Co. H. Illinois Infantry.
On March 7th, 1872 he was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Hefner, who survives. They had 4 sons.
