Grandma Goddard Passed Away at A Ripe Old Age

Mrs. Elizabeth G. Goddard died at her late residence at 8:50 a.m., Tuesday. She would have been 88 years of age if she had lived till Thanksgiving day. Her maiden name was Elizabeth G. Scott. She was born in Culpepper Co., Va., November 29, 1812, and was the oldest in a family of thirteen children. Her parents moved to Spencer, Ind., when Elizabeth was quite young, and there she was married to A.S. Eson in 1830, and they were the parents of three sons and one daughter. Of the fruit of this union all have gone to their long home except one son, John Eson of Kankakee. Mr. Eson died in 1843. In 1846 she moved with her children to Lexington, Ill., and was married in the same year to the Rev. Abbott Goddard, M.D., who was one of the most widely known clergymen of the M.E. church in this section and also a very successful medical practitioner. They had four children, two sons and two daughters, all of whom survive their mother. Mrs. Goddard became a Christian and joined the Presbyterian church seventy years ago. When she married Mr. Goddard, as he was a Methodist minister, she united with his church. After his death, which occurred Oct. 12, 1857, she again affiliated with the church of her early life. Mrs. Goddard was an earnest, exemplary woman, who lived a true life, and sought to train her children in the right way. She was respected and beloved by all who knew her. She leaves three sons, two daughters, two brothers, and one sister to mourn her loss.

The funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in the M.E. church, the Rev. A.B. Cooper, pastor of the Presbyterian church, will officiate, assisted by the Rev. J.E. Conner, pastor of the M.E. church. The body will be laid to rest in the Lexington cemetery. Friends who desire to view the remains may do so Thursday forenoon between the hours of 9 and 11 o'clock, and also between the hours of 1 and 1:30 p.m.

Died At Age of 88

Mrs. Elizabeth G. Goddard, One of Oldest Residents of County, Is Gone

Tuesday morning at 8:50 at her late residence in Lexington occurred the death of Mrs. Elizabeth G. Goddard, one of McLean county's oldest and most highly respected residents.

Mrs. Goddard was born November 29, 1812, in Culpeper county, Virginia, and would have reached the advanced aged of 88 years had she lived until Thursday. She was married to her first husband, Alexander E. Eson, who died many years ago at Spencer, Ind., to which union were born four children, as follows: Mrs. Mary Dawson, who died at the age of 19 years, the wife of Mr. Samuel Dawson, now of Chicago; Robert, who died at the age of 20 years; George, who died in Indiana at the age of 12 years; and John P.W. Eson, who is now living at Kankakee, Ill.

Mrs. Goddard was married to her second husband, Dr. Abbott Goddard, at Lexington, about 54 years ago. Four children, all of whom are living, were born to this marriage, as follows: Mr. F.F. Goddard, Mr. W.W. Goddard, Miss Harriet Goddard of Lexington, Ill. and Mrs. Ella Smith of Streator, Ill. She also leaves two brothers and one sister living: Samuel S. Scott, aged 78 years, at El Paso, Ill.; Mrs. Agnes McNaught, aged 72 years of Gridley, Ill.; and Mr. George W. Scott, aged 65 years, of Lexington. The combined ages of Mrs. Goddard, her sister and two brothers who survive her amount to 303 years, quite an unusual circumstance. She was the oldest of thirteen children and her brother, Mr. George Scott, of Lexington, was the youngest. Her father and mother lived until eleven children were married.

Mrs. Goddard was for many years a member of the Methodist church, but of late years she was a member of the Presbyterian church of Lexington. For the past three years she had enjoyed only fair health, till ten days ago, when she was stricken with paralysis of the throat and while she was unable to speak in the last few days her mind was perfectly clear when death came to her relief.

The funeral services will be held at the Methodist church in Lexington Thursday at 2 p.m., Rev. Cooper of the Presbyterian church, assisted by Rev. B.J. Connor of the Methodist church, officiating. The friends of the family may view the remains at her late home from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday. The interment will take place at the Porteus cemetery.
