A little more than a week ago Samuel Horrocks fell on the pavement on Washington avenue and suffered a fractured hip. The shock was severe because of his age and he gradually grew worse until death relieved him of his suffering, at about 5 o'clock Saturday
evening.
Mr. Horrocks was 78 years old and had spent many years in commercial enterprises of Ogden. He died at his home, 585 Twenty -fourth street surrounded by members of the family.
Mr. Horrocks was born July 7, 1834 at Maklesfield (sic), Cheshire, England. At Prestbury, Eng. July 23, 1853, he married Miss Catherine Sarah Buckingham and with his wife left the British Isles for America, February 4, 1854. He did not reach Salt Lake City, his destination, until October of the same year. The following year he moved to Ogden and had been a resident of this city ever since.
For 70 years Mr. Horrocks was a member of the Mormon church and had lent his aid in the upbuilding of the faith in many ways. For 40 years he was a merchant in Ogden and as such formed a very wide acquaintance, both in the city and in the surrounding country. During the administration of the late Mayor D. H. Peery, Mr. Horrocks acted as alderman and in that office faithfully served the city. Later he again served the city in the capacity of trustee of the board of education.
The deceased was the father of thirteen children, seven of whom survive. The living children are Mrs. Elizabeth A. Baxter, Mrs. H. H. Rolapp, Mrs. Jane Davis, Edward J. Horrocks, Joseph A. Horrocks, Mrs. E. S. Rolapp, and Richard J. Horrocks.
