On 14 September 2005, she became the longest-lived person of Italian descent ever, having surpassed Amalia Ruggieri Barone, who was an emigrant to the United States.
At the time of her death, Dighero was the 7th oldest living person in the world. She had also been the oldest verified living person in Europe.
She died of ischemia on 28 December 2005, four day after her 114th bithday.
