Died while living with his son Middleton Joseph Slack after having fallen and having broken his hip on April 8, 1932.

Died in Illinois.

His death certificate shows that James Chandler Slack had been a superintendent in a distillery for 30 years, leaving in 1916. He moved to Joliet, Illinois in 1925 or 1926 and while his death certificate shows that he lived in Joliet for 16 years, it was probably only 6 years.

Note: his name from article about his father (562-7) 1896, "of Daviess Co" KY

Daughter Mary Jean Slack Sullivan:

I remember Dad talking about a Sallie, but I'm unsure who she was. Did he call her "Ma Sallie" which sounds familiar to me? Or __________? Jerry says "Ask Jim. He'll know." Is that right?

This is the response I got from my brother Jim. I remember well enough now to think he's right.

Mary Jean

Jim Chandler Slack:

It was "Ma Sally" and I always thought she brought him up. I especially remember the story when someone told Ma Sally that Mid had been smoking and when confronted and admitting that he had been smoking she said "no you haven't". This isn't much help but tell Jerry that I appreciate his confidence (mis-placed) in me.

Tio

I can't even confirm the "Cully" last name. But, something is better than nothing.

Jim

p.s. I can imagine my descendents asking who was James Chandler and was he really a Colombian?

This is interesting, in the same 1900 census when his son Middleton was living with Sallie M Culley, his father, James Chandler Slack was living with a William Mix in Louisville. Any idea who he is?

From: Jim & Cristina Slack:

I am reasonably confident that he died in Joliet simply because I think he died, as you say, after at least Mary Jean was born. I remember Lucille speaking of him and saying how sweet he was. I am going to get a box of family history down out of the attic and see if it will answer these questions.

Mary Slack did a good job on the Slack history and it should be there. Mary gave copies to Mary Jean and myself. I made copies for my kids but don't know if Mary Jean did the same. Probably so. I can make a copy for you if you like.

Thanks Jim. Last night Sue and I were talking and were wondering what your grandfather was doing and where he lived after your grandmother died. I think he died when you and Mary Jean were very young so you may not remember him at all. It is all very interesting.

DAUGHTER NETTIE (Marietta Camilla Slack Wise):

A source indicated that Nettie is the adopted daughter of James Hillery Bryan and Sallie M. Mcdonald. That source indicates that Sallie M. McDonald married Freeland Culley (1844-1895), a second husband.
