DEATH OF ELIZUR CLARK.

He Was a Pioneer Business Man and Held High Positions.

A dispatch from Lyme, Conn., this morning announced the death of Elizur Clarke, one of the oldest residents of Syracuse. Mr. Clarke has been ill for some time with an affection of the heart, so that his death was not unexpected.

Elizur Clarke was born in Saybrook, Conn., October 5th, 1807, but came to this county in 1823, settling with his father at Cicero. He aided very much in the early settlement of Syracuse and was one of the pioneer salt manufacturers of the city. For many years he was associated with the late Governor Horatio Seymour in the Salina mill, which manufactured most of the salt logs used in the salt industry here. On the retirement of Governor Seymour from the firm the interest was taken by Thomas G. Alvord.

Mr. Clarke was the first Alderman from the First ward on the incorporation of the village of Syracuse into a city, and in 1863 represented his district in the Legislature.

Mr. Clarke has been identified with many of the business interests of the city and was for many years a director in the Salt Springs National bank. He was also a trustee of the Syracuse Savings bank and was one of the commission that built the present Court House. Mr. Clarke organized the Salina Coarse Salt company and owned a controlling interest in that organization.

The dead man leaves a widow and three children, Mrs. Harriet Avery, the wife of the late Augustus Avery, Mrs. Mary D. Manning of Lyme, Conn., and Dr. John Seymour Clarke of this city. For some years the deceased lived at Lyme, where his second wife was born.
