Robert Nathan "Babe" Baker, 84, a Rockdale resident since August of 1939, was born in Thrall. He and his first wife, Bertha Louise Nelson (d. 1966) were married November 26, 1941. He married his second wife, Mildred, on January 18, 1968 in Rockdale at First Christian Church. Mr. Baker spent most of his childhood in Taylor. After graduating from Taylor High School in 1935, he began working as a baker in Taylor, Austin and Caldwell. In August of 1939 he came to Rockdale and started working for Steins Bakery. From 1942 to 1948 he served in the U.S. Navy as a baker throughout World War II in the states and in the Mariannas Islands. Mr. Baker started working for the U.S. Postal Service in 1952 and retired as Assistant Post Master for the U.S. Post Office in Rockdale in 1976 and enjoyed his retirement and traveling throughout the US. He was a very active member of the First Christian Church in Rockdale and served as an elder. He died at the Manor Oaks Nursing Home in Rockdale. Funeral services were held July 18, 2002 from the Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale. Burial followed in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Rockdale. Rockdale Reporter, July 18, 2002
