Shelley, July 19 - John Walter Chaffin, 81, retired farmer and well-known civic and LDS church leader, died Saturday at his home following a lingering illness.

He was born May 4, 1873 in Cedar City, Utah, a son of Henry and Leatha Jane Chaffin. He married Sarah L. Collings Sept. 20, 1896 in the St. George LDS Temple. They came to Idaho Nov. 3, 1901 settling at Lincoln. He served on the Utah-Idaho Sugar Co. board, school board and two canal boards until his health failed. In 1910 they moved to Woodfille and in 1920 to Rose where he farmed until 1942 when they moved to Shelley.

Active in LDS Church work he filled a mission for nearly two years, served as counselor of the Woodville bishopric; first counselor in the Rose Sunday school.

Survivors include his widow and the following sons and daughters: Mrs. William Humphries, Coltman; Oscar, Alma and Wren Chaffin, Rose; Mrs. Harold Humphries, Shelley; Mrs. Victor Jensen and Carl Chaffin, Blackfoot and Mrs. Thomas Jorgensen, Blackfoot; Mrs. Otis Harris, Melvin Chaffin and Mrs. Homer Johnson, Groveland; Mrs. Herbert Crossey, Idaho Falls; 54 grandchildren; 50 great grandchildren; one great great-grandchild; one brother, Ed Chaffin, Boise; two sisters, Mrs. Alma Gifford, Kimball and Mrs. Mrytle Gull, Idaho Falls.

Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery under direction of the Nalder Funeral Home.
