Bailiff Johnston Dies At 65
William McKeehan Johnston, bailiff of Porter Superior court until his recent illness, died at 6:15 p.m. Thursday in Porter Memorial hospital after an extended illness. He was 65.
Johnston, a graduate of Valparaiso High school and literary and law courses at the University of Michigan, was appointed bailiff on April 26 of this year by Superior Judge J. A. Fleishbein to replace the late Joseph H. Durand.
Upon his graduation from the University of Michigan, Johnston practiced law in Valparaiso for a short time. He became deputy prosecutor under the late C. W. Jensen when the latter was elected to the prosecutor's job.
While Jensen was elected judge of the Porter Circuit court, Johnston was his bailiff for eight years. Johnston was also employed at the bearing division of the McGill Manufacturing company for 14 years as a storekeeper.
Native of Valparaiso
He was born in Valparaiso March 25, 1892, the son of Judge William and Maude (McKeehan) Johnston. On March 21, 1917, in Valparaiso, he married Pearle Stoner, who survives.
Surviving besides the widow are one daughter, Mrs. Duane (Adeltha) Roseberry, RFD 1, Hebron; one nephew, Benjamin Johnston, Chesterton; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
Johnston was a member of the Presbyterian church, American Legion, Moose lodge, and a veteran of World War I.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Bartholomew Funeral home with the Rev. Oliver Starn, First Presbyterian church, officiating. Burial will be in Graceland cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Saturday.
