Samuel Allen married Mary (Norvell/Norville) Allen on April 18, 1848 by Justice of the Peace Levi Long in Platte County, Missouri (likely in Kansas City). Samuel Allen was the son of John Easter Allen. John Easter Allen's father was Samuel Allen Senior, a soldier in the Revolutionary War.

Samuel Allen, his brother Rial Allen (Ryall) and their uncle Samuel Allen are listed among early pioneers who settled between the boundaries of Benton and Platte Counties, Missouri (Page 86, Godspeed's 1888 Book: A History of Andrew and Dekalb Counties, Misouri: From Earliest Times to the Present; Together with Sundry Personal, Business and Professional Sketches and Family Records; Besides a Condensed History of the State of Missouri). Samuel's uncle Samuel lived in Missouri a brief time before settling permanently in Oregon. The name S. Allen also appears in the list of old early settlers of Chariton County, Missouri (Page 552, National Historical Society's 1883 Book: History of Howard and Chariton Counties).

Samuel and his wife Mary were from Pulaski County, Kentucky. In 1837, Samuel came west alone at the age of 19 and settled in Kansas City (then known as Westport Landing). He later settled in Andrew County on purchased land. During the Civil War, he moved to McDonald County, IL. In 1870, he returned to Missouri and lived on a farm in Chariton County which he purchased from Ed and George Williams. It was originally the Abbot farm and among the original farms in the region. Samuel and Mary had ten children, Rachel, Martha, Edward V., Susan, John D., Nathaniel N., William, Samuel Price, Mollie (Mary), and Harvey.

All of the children except Mary and Harvey were born in Andrew County, MO. Mary and Harvey were born in McDonough, IL.

Rachel Allen married John Barker Rutledge. They had no children. John's grandparents, William Richard Rutledge (b 1786 - d 1851) and Elizabeth Williams (1792-1840), married and had John's father, Richard William Rutledge, in Virginia in 1817. John's grandparents lived in West Virginia and Virginia. They moved from VA to Fulton and McDonough County, IL. John's father, Richard William Rutledge (b 1817, d 1888), married Emily Kerby (b 1820-d 1884) and moved to Chariton County, MO. Richard and Emily had twelve children. Son John Barker Rutledge married Rachel Allen. John Barker Rutledge had eleven siblings: Charles Franklin Rutledge, Richard Warren Rutledge, William Rutledge, Robert Thomas Rutledge, George Finley Rutledge, Johnson Keith Rutledge, Lyman James Rutledge, Edward L. Rutledge, Frances E. Rutledge, Harry Milton Rutledge and Lovella Kate Rutledge. Richard and Emily Barker are buried in Prairie Hill Cemetery.

Martha Allen married Henry Ehrhardt (b 8-26-1838, d 1-6-1915). They married in 1874 in Salisbury, MO. Children: Allen Ehrhardt (b 8-16-1875) and Harvey Ehrhardt (b 8-26-1838, d 8-6-1915). (Note added by Laura: Allen Ehrhardt gave Henry Allen his first suit. Allen Ehrhardt was our cousin Thomas Henry Ehrhardt's grandfather.)

Edward Valentine Allen married Ida Flora Dunn in 1882. Children: Leslie, Edith, Everett, Florence. After Ida Flora passed away, he married Margaret (Ullum) Stewart, a widow. Margaret's children from her previous marriage (Thomas O., John, Frank, James, Ella Florence) came to Missouri to live near her and Edward.

Susan Frances Allen married Jess Elliott in 1885. Children: Twins Leo and Lee

John D. Allen married Mary (Millie) F. Naylor (b 6-12-1864, d 1958), the daughter of John B. and Melinda (Cleeton) Naylor, on 2-27-1884. They lived in Pryor, OK. Children: Loren (b 1-16-1885 in Sumner, MO) married Alberta Ehrhardt, Viola (b 2-6-1886) married Lee Younger, Sam (J. Samuel) (b 3-4-1888 at Salisbury) married Pearl Smith, Earl (b 11-25-1889 in Salisbury) married Kate Hardy, Chauncey (b 1-24-1907, d 6-23-1958).

Nathaniel Newton Allen married Emma Smith. They had a son, Ross Clearman Allen. Emma passed away. Nathaniel then married Florence Carlstead. Children: Mary Roe, William E., Norvell C., Nathaniel N., Christine and Henry

J. William Allen never married.

Samuel Price Allen lived in Prairie Hill, Chariton County, Missouri and later settled in Bay City, Texas. He married Mary Esther Gerhardt who was born in Ohio and was of Dutch descent. They owned a 100-acre ranch and pecan orchard which Samuel named the S. P. Allen Pecan Grove-Stock Farm located on Caney Creek between Cedar Lane and Bay City. The pecan trees were over 100 years old. The area was called Rugeley Switch due to the train between Bay City and Hawkinsville switching there. Children: Verna "Vern" W. Allen (b 9-7-1889, d 3-15-1950), Samuel "Dale" Allen (b 11-18-1891), Harvey Rolandus Allen (b 4-7-1898, d 5-18-1972), Clarence Roscoe Allen (b 2-6-1900, d 1-17-1980), Lucille Marie (Mary) Allen (b 5-25-1905, d 1983), Joe G. Allen (b 9-19-1909, d 5-5-1995).

Mary Byrd Allen never maried.

About Samuel and Mary(Norvell) Allen's Migration to Missouri (As written by Nathaniel Newton Allen's son, Henry Ehrhardt Allen)
Samuel and Mary (Norvell) Allen migrated from Kentucky to Missouri shortly after marrying. They settled in the St. Joseph area in Andrew County near Whitesville (a small village named in honor of John White, builder of the village's first country store, and whose wife's father built the village's first mill--History of Andrew County). Samuel and Mary had relatives in the area, but do not know if they came sometime after. A bachelor brother Jack Allen came with them and spent time in MO. Their ancestors migrated from Virginia to Kentucky - Scotch and Irish. They were Baptist and Democrats.

During the early part of the Civil War, Sam and family moved to McCambridge, IL (1863). They did not sell their land in Missouri. There came General Order #11 of 1863. They visited for 4 years. Much meanness was going on. Grandmother told about Federal troops passing the place. Grandfather hid in a corn shock. Troops went to the cornfield - took shocks next to the ones in which they were hiding. Women prepared meals for the soldiers.

They remained in Illinois until 1872 - Came back to MO and settled 3 miles north of Salisbury (now Prairie Valley Cemetery). They came several ways - had to ford the Mississippi River (hit a place low enough). They were frightened. Cows and horses had to swim. Grandpa Sam and Uncle John walked behind and drove cows. Sam was 13 years old, and John about 15 years old. John was 2 years older than Nathaniel. Another family came with them - They settled on adjoining farms (north of Salisbury). Their name was Bosworth. There are still Bosworths north of Salisbury. (Laura's Census Note: The 1860 Census shows Henry Bosworth living on a farm near Samuel and Mary Allen when they were living in Andrew County, Platte Township.)

The soil was fertile, and they prospered. They later built a new house and barn. A Baptist church was built on the south side of the Allen land, and area around made a cemetery (now Prairie Valley).

After many years, services were no longer held at the church. Many of the Allens are buried at Prairie Valley Cemetery.
