Alfred J. Brothers, 79, of Wellington Way, Niskayuna and formerly of West Glenville, died January 11, 2010 at Baptist Health and Rehabilitation Center after a long illness. Born in Hudson, NY on May 19, 1930, son of the late Alfred J. Brothers, Sr. and Mary Holobusky Brothers, his family moved to Valatie where Alfred attended Martin H. Glenn High School. Al received his B.S. in metallurgical engineering from R.P.I. in Troy in 1952 and his M.S. from the University of Michigan in 1956. Mr. Brothers served as a lieutenant in the Navy from '52 to '54 aboard the USS Belle Grove. Alfred was united in marriage on June 28, 1954 to the former Barbara F. Watson. He was employed as a test engineer in San Diego, CA in '54 to '55 and a research engineer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena from '56 to '60. Mr. Brothers was an applied research metallurgist for G.E. Materials and Process Laboratories in Schenectady for many years where his field was fatigue, fracture and failure analysis. Mr. Brothers received the prestigious Geisler Award for his work in the field of metallurgy. Al was a resident of W. Glenville from 1961 to 2008 prior to moving to Niskayuna. He was a communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church in Schenectady. Al was an avid reader, especially of religious philosophy. His hobbies included woodworking and gardening. He was predeceased by his sister, Doris Tobakian. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Barbara F. Brothers; sons, Alfred J. Brothers, Jr. and his wife, Hillary of Paradise Valley, AZ, Christopher T. Brothers of NYC; daughters, Julie F. Brothers of Schenectady, Margery E. Brothers of Cambridge, MA and Sara Cooper Brothers and her husband, Matthew King of Albuquerque, NM; grandchildren, Alfred J. Brothers III, Olivia and Isabelle Brothers, Bennett, Cooper and Mackenzie King. Al is survived also by his sister, Eileen Brothers of Valatie, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, January 18, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church, 816 Union St., Schenectady with the Rev. John Facci officiating. Calling hours Sunday 2 to 4 and 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Rd., East Glenville (Mayfair section). Committal services will be held Tuesday, January 19, at 9 a.m. at Gerald B.H. SolomonSaratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Rd.,Schuylerville.
