JOY LEON OBITUARY

Dr. Joy Ann Gay Leon Mar. 7, 1923 - Mar. 31, 2008 Dr. Joy Ann Gay Leon, PhD, RN, was interned with military honors on Friday, April 4, 2008, at Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio. The service was presided over by long time friend and priest, Father Gerard Benson. Dr. Leon will join her husband, Max J. Leon, who preceded her in death and was also interned with military honors at Ft. Sam Houston. Our beloved mother and friend died peacefully at home surrounded by family. Dr. Leon was a 2nd Lieutenant, Army Nurse Corps, in WWII and later received her PHD in Education and Psychology. Her husband received the Distinguished Flying Cross, among other medals, for his combat missions and her uncle was General Hobart (Hap) Gay, Chief-of-Staff to General George Patton in WWII. Dr. Leon was passionate in her life about giving to others, especially children. She spent much time in Honduras and Guatemala nursing poverty stricken children and later went to Russia on a teacher exchange program. Mother assisted many families during the 1947 Texas City Disaster, particularly many school children that had been injured. As a Child Psychologist in Lake Jackson, TX, the children called her "Dr. Joy" and she was a true joy for all of those she helped so lovingly thru the years. Dr. Leon was later a professor at LSU and moved back to Texas in 1981, residing in Ft. Worth near her grandchildren. Moving to Austin in 1996, Mother never really retired but continued to pursue her education and became an Ombudsman for the Austin Area On Aging. Dr. Leon is survived by her daughters Cheryle Ann Leon and husband Dennis Venski, Catherine Leon Parker and husband Bob Parker, her son Ralph L. Leon and wife Debbie Leon, plus granddaughters Dr. Kim Leon and husband Duane Rudy, Ashley Leon, grandsons Kris Walker and wife Pam Walker, Steve Walker, and her pride and joy, great granddaughter, Amelia Joy Leon-Rudy. A private memorial service and Celebration of Life was held Friday evening, April 4th, by her family and presided over by Chaplain John Connor. To honor Dr. Leon's life long compassion and dedication to helping children whom she loved so dearly, the family is requesting memorial contributions to the Austin Children's Shelter. Mother wrote "Family is a wonderful word, it indicates love and belonging to a safe place". With abundant joy and smiles, your devotion to family with love, generosity of spirit and your kindness of heart have enriched the lives of all you have touched...Thank you, Your Loving Family.
