Katherine Klein Greder's (1844-1921) Obituary (Denison Bulletin)
Headline: Death Takes Another Pioneer—Mrs Jacob Greder dies at home of son in Nishnabotny Township; Resided in Crawford County Since 1887 and Reached Age of 77 years, 2 months and 18 days

At the home of her son Mike Greder in Nishnabotny township, death called to the yonder shore Mrs Katherine Greder, one of Crawford county's early pioneers. She has been making her home the past 2 years with her daughter Mrs Salome Greder Ruch of Washington township and had gone to her son's home for a visit about 10 days previous to her death. She seemed to be in her usual health in the morning and there were no signs of the rapidly nearing end. A fainting spell or stroke overcome her and shortly afterward about 5:40 PM Sunday evening (July 24, 1921) she passed away without struggle like going into a peaceful slumber.

Katherine Greder, nee Klein, was born May 6 1844 in Mietesheim, Alsace, France and there grew to young womanhood. On November 9 1865 she was united in marriage to Jacob Sr Greder of that same place, and Mietesheim continued to be their home until in 1887 when they decided to emigrate to America. In April of 1887, the family came to America and here has been the home of the deceased continually since then. They resided on a farm near Buck Grove until 1913, when they moved to Buck Grove. Here the husband passed away a few years ago. Since then Katherine has been making her home with her daughters Margaret Greder Didier and Salome Greder Ruch.

In 1915, it was the good fortune of Jacob Sr and Katherine Greder to celebrate their Golden wedding anniversary. Katherine Greder was the mother of 8 children, 2 of whom preceded her in death [Son Michael died in infancy (1879-1880), and son George Sr died in 1919 (1868-1919)]. Those still living and mourning the death of a loving and devoted mother are: (1) Margaret [Henry Didier; Denison], (2) Jacob Jr [Augusta Carstens; Washington township], (3) Kate [Jacob Deiber; Buck Grove], (4) Peter Sr [Salome Deiber; Buck Grove], (5) Mike [Mate Carstens; Buck Grove] and (6) Salome [George Ruch; Vail].

Katherine Greder enjoyed a large circle of friends, all holding her in highest esteem, as she was one of the noble Christian ladies once met you never forget. The funeral was held today, with Rev Wetzeler of Schleswig officiating. Interment was made in the Washington township cemetery [Saint Petri Lutheran cemetery] besides her husband. The Bulletin extends sympathy to the sorrowing children.
