U.S. Congressman. Born near Boonesborough, Kentucky, he moved with his parents to Fayette, Missouri, in 1828. During the Texas revolution with Mexico for independence, he joined the US Army in 1836 and served as Sergeant Major of his regiment. After Texas won her independence he was appointed chief auditor in the office of the Republic of Texas and served until his resignation in 1838. Returning to Missouri, he was admitted to the bar in 1841 and commenced to practice law in Fayette, Missouri. With the outbreak of the Mexican War, he was commissioned a Captain in command of Company A, 2nd Regiment, Missouri Mounted Volunteers, US Army, serving (1846-47). After war, for a while he was editor of the Franklin County Union Flag newspaper, then went to California and engaged in gold mining. He again returned to Missouri, settled in Savannah, practiced law, then moved to Nebraska City, Nebraska and continued the practice of law. When the Territory of Nebraska was formed, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-third Congress, serving (1854-55). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed his law practice in Savannah, Missouri and served during the Civil War as a Lieutenant Colonel in command of the 51st Regiment, Missouri Volunteer Infantry, Union Army, until honorably discharged on August 31, 1865. After the war, he continued to practice law until his death at age 81 in Savannah, Missouri.
