U.S. Congressman. Moving to Michigan, he attended Adrian College and served with the 16th Regiment, Michigan Volunteer Infantry, Union Army of the Potomac, during the Civil War. After the war, he graduated from the law department of the University of Michigan, in 1871, was admitted to the bar, relocated to Hastings, Nebraska, in 1872 and practiced law. In 1883, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-eighth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until his death.
