US Congressman. An 1831 graduate of the United States Military Academy, he resigned his commission on January 27, 1832 to pursue his agricultural interests. Elected to the United States House of Representatives under the Whig ticket, he served one term, from March 4, 1841 to March 3, 1843; then became associated with various mining enterprises. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he reentered the Army as a Brigadier General and was appointed as General Winfield Scott's Chief of Staff. He then served as the Inspector General from 1862 until his death.
