He was the son of John and Elizabeth (Burget) Miller. Andrew grew to manhood on his fathers farm in Ohio.

When a young single man he made the journy west to Holt County, Missouri. Here, during the Civil War, he enlisted in the Union Army at Rush Bottom and was mustered in at St Joseph on 24 Mar. 1864, Missouri State Militia. Andy was mustered out at Benton Barracks, Missouri on 13 July 1865. He was paid for his services, the use of his horse and one halter.

On 13 Dec. 1866 he married Mary Catherine Riley. They lived in Holt County for several years and then moved to Kansas about 1875. Before 1910 they migrated to Idaho and then to California before 1920.

He was the father of ten children; Hiram U., James M., Carrie, John F., Arizona, Eva, William B., Ira A., Grace and Jesse Lee.
