Joseph Burleson was the 10th child and the 5th son of Aaron Burleson and Rachel Hendricks. His Bible is displayed at the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas. He was among the First Families of Texas settling in Bastrop County as a member of Stephen F. Austin's colony in 1834. His land grant was located on Walnut Creek east of the Colorado River near Smithville. In 1807 he served as Captain of the 29th Regiment of the State Militia in White County, Tennessee. During the War of 1812 he was a private in the Mississippi State Militia. In 1814 he participated in General Andrew Jackson's expedition against the Creek Indians. During the struggle for Texas independence he helped supply the troops of his nephew,
