Gloria Marie Merkle was born on October 2, 1927 in Bronx, NY. She was one of at least 7 children born to German immigrant Frederick Gottleib Merkle (a baker) and his wife Emily Crankshaw Merkle.
By the time Gloria was 2 years old, her family had moved to Queens, NY, where she grew up.
She married Cortland, NY, native Charles Warren Butler (son of Charles Warren Butler and his wife Mabel Yorkey Butler).
Charles & Gloria had at least 10 children. They lived in Queens until about 1960, at which time the family moved to upstate NY, settling in Elmira.
Gloria worked for many years at the A&P food processing plant in Horseheads NY. Charles died in 1997, and after several years of declining health, she herself died on November 11, 2009. She was 82 years old.
She is buried with Charles at Woodlawn National Cemetery.
