I am still researching FREDERICK GOTTLIEB MERKLE and his wife EMILY M CRANKSHAW MERKLE. They were my children's great grandparents.

Records show that Fred was born GOTLIEB FREDERICH MERKLE, on March 17, 1895, to Johann Michael Merkle and his wife Christine Catharine Armbruster Merkle. He was christened at Bissingen an der Teck (OA, Kirchheim), Württemberg, Germany on March 24, 1895.

In 1910, he traveled to America on the Rijndam, arriving at New York City on September 13. He was just 16 years old. Passenger list for the ship tells us his immediate destination was the home of his uncle Conrad Merkle (actually Johann Conrad Merkle, his father's youngest brother, who had come from Germany two years earlier). Conrad was a baker, with his own store, and no doubt put Fred to work right away.

Fred was still a citizen of Germany when he completed his WWI Draft Registration on June 5, 1917.

On July 3, 1919 he married Emily Crankshaw, daughter of William W ("Willie") Crankshaw and his wife Annie Hittel.

Fred & Emily were the parents of at least 7 children:

-Frederick P Merkle (1920 – 1995)

-Margaret Merkle (1921 – 2005)

-Robert Charles Merkle Sr (1925 – 1999)

-GLORIA MARIE MERKLE (1927 – 2009)

-Joseph James Merkle (1930 – 2009)

-Herbert William Merkle (1932 – 1962)

-Carol A Merkle (1939 – 2005)

DESCRIPTION: April 27, 1942: 5'6" tall, 185 pounds, brown hair, blue eyes, light complexion.

OCCUPATION: Baker

Fred died in October 1966, and is buried with Emily at Cypress Hills Cemetery.
