Lester married Anna Elizabeth Hare on December 27,1913. Prior to coming to Akron when Lester was 25 years old he was a coal miner for the Schell Coal Co. Family lore has it that when Lester first came to Akron he worked as a street paver (when streets were made of brick) for the city of Akron and later worked for Goodyear Aircraft.

On his WWI draft registration Lester stated his birth year as 1892 and birth place as Elk Lick which is considered first hand information.
