Jodelle "Jody" Gaines McCall, 76, died Saturday at a Wichita Falls hospital. She was a lifetime Wichita Falls resident and a professional freelance writer.

Mrs. McCall was born January 31, 1923, the daughter of Sydney and Betty Gaines. She graduated from Wichita Falls High School in 1939 and attended Texas State College for Women in Denton. She graduated from the University of Texas in 1943, where she was the first female night editor of The Daily Texan. She and Maurice W. McCall were married Dec. 5, 1943.

McCall began her career at the Wichita Falls Record News in 1944 as a reporter; in time she became the paper's first female wire editor, then was named city editor. In 1982, she was special assistant to Wichita Falls Times editor Larry Grauerholtz for the Centennial Edition.

"History was her focus. Her lifelong residence in Wichita Falls gave her a unique perspective on events both past and present," said Grauerholtz. "She was devoted to the idea that we owe our children and grandchildren an accurate record of what happened long before they came to be."

McCall was partner and manager of the MWM Company and a director of the United Electric Company. An avid historian and genealogist, she served as member and chairman of the Wichita County Historical Commission, an advisory member of the Wichita County Heritage Society and member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member, auditor and board member of the Woman's Forum, and member and past president of the Woman's Forum Writer's Club."

"Jody cared deeply about this community and its history and about preserving that history and our heritage," said Times Record News editor Carroll Wilson. He worked with McCall on Wichita Heritage Magazine. "She also cared about the 'life of the mind'; she had a lively curiosity and the uncanny ability to hone in on what was important, focus and that and not on things that didn't matter. I don't know all the good things she did because she never bragged about any of it, but I'm sure that her hand was involved in numerous projects, all of which were for the betterment of Wichita Falls."

McCall was a lifetime member of the Texas Exes, a member of the Alpha Chi Omega Alumnae Club, the Texas Media Association, the Poetry Society, Red River Romance Writers, Wichita Falls Fiction Writers and the Big Band Dance Club.

She was a member of Church of the Good Shepherd, where she once served as president of the Federated Missionary Society, and was a member of the Bishop Moore Altar Guild.

Survivors include her husband, Maurice; a son, Joseph Hawley McCall of Austin; a daughter, Marilyn Ruth McCall of Houston; and three grandchildren. Her son, David Gaines McCall, died in 1975.
