J. J. Burnett was a blacksmith, wagon and buggy maker. He married Melissa Ellen Winn prior to July of 1870.
His obituary begins with, "A life span that began 13 years before the Civil War, today was ended with the death of Johnny Burnett-builder of Hollister's first business structure."
He served as a trustee for the Hollister School district, was one of the organizers of the Alert Hose Company #1 and a member of the Hook and Ladder Company. He was an active member of the Christian Church.
